The Education Page

Eventually, this page will offer a vast array of valuable resources about the ILWU and its history.

Right now, we have only a few links for you guys:

One is the ILWU Recommended Reading List, which we've reworked into a convenient way to order the books online. You won't find it all for sale online, but it's a start...

The second thing is really cool. It's an article from the Spring 1987 issue of Labor History, an academic journal about... well... Labor History. It's entitled, somewhat unexcitingly, "Contractually Sanctioned Job Action and Workers' Control: The Case of the San Francisco Longshoremen".

Sounds kinda boring right? Read on....

Here are three slideshow presentations by Robert W. Cherny, Professor of History at San Francisco State University, a scholar on maritime labor history who has written extensively about the ILWU:

Who Was Harry Bridges? is a presentation he gives to various community groups who ask for help in understanding the labor movement.

Maritime Labor History of the Pacific Coast was prepared for a guest lecture to a class sponsored by the California Maritime Academy and the J. Porter Shaw Library of the National Maritime Museum in September 2003.

Longshore Workers on the Pacific Coast, 1848-1934 was presented at the Longshore History and Traditions Conference in Palm Springs, CA, September 2004.

If you know of other educational resources about the ILWU and its history, traditions and culture on the internet, let us know and we will link to it.
